Miles Farmer OAM, of the Queensland division, was recently awarded the RSL’s prestigious Meritorious Service Medal

Miles Farmer has just informed us of the following:

Yesterday, I was privileged to be awarded the RSL’s Meritorious Service Medal. It was at the Luncheon for Life Members of the Brisbane North District which I helped form some twenty years ago after I led a revolt against the dictatorship of the Bill and Bob show which ran South Eastern District.

The RSL is now so very different to what I remembered as a small boy during the Depression years. We lived in country Qld. Old diggers would turn up to the school house where we lived. Mum would give them a meal and Dad had some RSL funds which he could them a small handout to help them on their way. So many things have changed as change they must to deal with the circumstances for diggers of today. I am glad I do not have to cope with them, but am very happy to support the very active committee of the Sherwood Indooroopilly RSL Sub Branch. The Sub Branch has celebrated its Centenary, and had arranged a magnificent concert to mark the occasion. A retired Army Bandmaster, Patrick Pickett helped arrange it.

Sadly Mavis is in the Nursing Home next to where I live, but I called in on my way home to show her the Award. I said in my acceptance words that without the support and help of Mavis I could not have been able to do whatever I did. She had been awarded Hon Life Membership of Pony Riding for the Disabled, where she had been helping long before I became involved.

I must finish up, as the little old dog I am minding for my son and grandson is telling me it is breakfast time. He is older than my grandson—we have grown old together.

Best wishes to you and those I have CC’d

Miles

Congratulations Miles!
