Federal TreasurerTom BabingtonTom was born in Kuwait in 1955, the son of parents who were English to their bootstraps but who had only gone to school there as their own parents were based wherever the British army decided to send them, and this may have sown the seed of his own interest in military history. He spent his first 10 years in Canada, as his Dad was an oil engineer, and even then Kuwait was a place best left quickly. However Canada is cold and to people born in warmer climes it also wasn't a place to linger so they moved to Adelaide, Australia. 5 years in Adelaide, a move to Perth, and for the next 30 years he lived in the sunny West, gaining a BA and a Grad Dip in Education and became a teacher, husband and father of 2 girls. In 2003 they moved to Canberra, and for someone with an interest in military history Tom found Nirvana (the AWM). He started, and still works, as a volunteer in the online gallery, and now works as a casual in the Education Section, while still doing 2 days a week teaching. He loves Canberra and can't see himself leaving there in a hurry. The change in cities has brought other changes as well. He joined the RAAFAR as an Education Officer with 28 Sqdn. He must be the oldest Flying Officer in the current Air Force. Now there's a bit of research for someone with nothing better to do! Tom joined the Society in 2004 and was elected to Federal Council in August 2006, taking over the duties of Federal Treasurer. Page last updated on: 19/03/08 |
